’Twas just before Christmas in twenty eighteen,

We’ve done lots of stuff, and what things we have seen.

The country continues to be somewhat split,

Everyone keeps having large hissy fits.

All you need do is just mention one name

To hear a loud chorus of, “He gets the blame.”

But Donald J. Trump is a hard man to beat,

Especially when using his penchant to tweet.

Not many days come and go anymore

Without someone wanting to show him the door.

Yet still his poll numbers remain pretty high,

Many still thinking he’s quite a swell guy.

At last count the Dems had achieved a full House

And all of them say Donald T is a louse.

Meanwhile the Rs kept control of the Senate,

Several new faces have moved in as tenants.

Thank goodness for other things filling the news

To keep us from constantly singing the blues.

The Braves from Atlanta did turn things around,

Making the play-offs and thrilling the town.

That was okay and we all gave a cheer,

But it paled with the prize at the end of the year.

MLS soccer United a town,

Five-Stripers wearing a well-deserved crown.

Speaking of soccer, the World Cup loved France,

Alas the U.S. team missed the big dance.

Olympically Seoul said, “Come play, friend and foe;”

Pyongyang sent athletes as part of the show.

Boston beat up on the Dodgers to win,

LA was handed their hats yet again.

In B-ball the Warriors once more claimed the prize,

(I’m not really sure why the other guys tried.)

Philly made folks in New England quite sad,

And Tom Brady’s wife said, “Come home, be a dad.”

Tiger’s back winning (or so it would seem),

Causing the networks to all cheer and beam.

The Tide colored Crimson again broke some hearts,

Especially since Georgia had such a head start.

Those big boys from Bama just never gave in,

Winning in overtime, champs once again.

Death claimed the Bushes, both Barbara and George,

A country saluted the paths they did forge.

When presidents pass on, an era goes too,

Classier folks you won’t find than those two.

They weren’t the only ones leaving the scene,

Maverick McCain was a rebel supreme.

Billy the Preacher to millions worldwide,

No doubt met his Maker the moment he died.

John Young the astronaut walked on the moon,

Aretha delighted us all with her tunes.

Funny man Doc Simon wrote famously

About how an Odd Couple could provide glee.

Keith Jackson often would punctuate praise

By yelling “Whoa Nelly” for great football plays.

A Marvelous guy with a penchant for tales,

Stan Lee’s creations seldom would fail.

Political analysts come and they go,

But Charles the Krauthammer was really a pro.

Paul Allen helped create Microsoft’s prime,

Changing the world with one gig at a time.

Physics to most of us isn’t a treat,

Hawking its wares, though, to Stephen was neat.

Cannonball Runs ceased to have the same frills,

Without Burt’s black mustache providing the thrills.

Tweets didn’t stop with the President’s posts,

A couple of folks didn’t mean what they wrote.

The Oscars will make do without Kevin Hart,

And Roseanne and her show are now miles apart.

And then there was Kim (not the TV celeb)

Meeting with Trump, seeking sanctions to end.

But what’s up his sleeve, there’s the rub in the stew,

At least no more bombs were set off (that we knew).

The Emmys were aired but nobody watched,

And not because victory speeches were botched.

The public, it seems, may have just had enough,

Of make-believe pros preaching left-winger stuff.

Meghan and Harry put smiles on our faces,

A marriage, a baby, in fairly tale places.

American rapper king Kanye (sans Kim)

Went to the White House for speeches and grins.

Hurricanes battered the Gulf and East coast,

Michael and Florence turned small towns to toast.

Fires rent destruction way out in the West,

Firefighters proving again they’re the best.

A new judge was picked to become a Supreme,

His seating more nightmare and less of a dream.

Even that spectacle, bad as it seemed,

Couldn’t compare to some shattering screams.

Once again guns were brought into a school

With students at Parkland the targets of cruel.

The Second Amendment remains one big right

Although it precipitates many a fight.

God’s Planand One Kissand Shotgunwere hits,

Somehow they missed being on my play list.

Drake and Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Grande

Made tons of money with songs they sung their way.

Incredibles 2and more mean Mr. Grinch

Made flicks’ top ten list, but it wasn’t a cinch.

Comic book heroes continued to thrive

With special effects and a few actors live.

Game of Throneskilled pretty much every show,

As streaming and cable fare raked in the dough.

NCISstayed on top of the heap

Gibbs and his minions still crush ratings sweeps.

And that’s just the tip of the year in review,

Now out with the old and in with the new.

As always, be nice to the people you love

And even the ones you’d just much rather shove.

The season upon us gives hope to the heart

That we’ll grow together instead of apart.

Reflect on the Reason we pause in our lives,

To thank the Good Lord and be glad we survived.

Merry Christmas.
